Hardwood floors have made a big comeback in the past few years but too much can be a bit overwhelming, and they don’t retain any heat so in the cooler months you can find your feet getting chilly. Using a rug in a large room such as a living room can add a beautiful focal point to the room and accentuate your hardwood floors even more. It will also keep the floor warmer and cosier. You can choose from Oriental rugs, traditional styles or contemporary styles.

A family room, games room, or living room are all excellent candidates for a focal point rug. If you have a games room a rectangular rug beneath the pool table looks awesome. If you have a fireplace an area rug in front of the fireplace adds elegance and luxury and it’s a comfy place to sit and enjoy the fire. Choose something that stands out from your room decor or blends in. Your choice.

Whether you have a grand entrance or a smaller entrance you should consider making a decor statement where people enter. You could place a beautiful oval braided rug at your entrance, or a bold rectangular rug. A rug at your entrance also has some function use as well. The worst thing for your carpets is oil, dirt, and sand. Even a clean pair of shoes will track particles onto the carpet. Using a rug will help reduce what gets tracked because it will act as a catcher. If you have a tiled or linoleum entrance it will also keep it looking cleaner as the rug can pick up the dirt or mud off of shoes and it’s easily cleaner up with a vacuum.

We’ll all face worn carpets at some point and lets face it carpet replacement is a big investment that we can’t all afford. An affordable rug is a perfect way to give your room an entire new look and disguise that worn carpet. Most carpets wear in the middle of the room where they get the heavier traffic and the outer foot or two often still look relatively new. So buy a huge rug that compliments the carpet already on the floor leaving just the outer edge that’s less worn exposed. You’ll be amazed at how different your room looks. Rugs are also a good way to hide a damaged or stained area of carpet.

If you are renting you certainly don’t want to spend your money on carpets. Whether your carpets are worn or they just don’t fit your decor you can give your apartment a facelift for a minimal amount of money. Then when you move you can roll up your rug and take it with you to your new home. You can use one or more rugs throughout your apartment to add your own personal touch and finish your home decor.
